It's complicated, and jumping in and playing with it isn't helping. I feel like a moron, I've tried to learn photoshop CS5 the way I've learned other things - by experimentation. Evening's book and believe that you may find Mr. Kelby's book will help you develope an immediate useful workflow that of course can and should be adjusted to your own needs and desires. museum archival procedurals, the history of the adobe corporation etc.etc, which can be interesting, but not the most useful information for those of us trying to become acquainted with the basics so we can grow into better techniques for post processing.

Some other authors spend scores of pages on library science. He also gives you useful information, like where to download the files he uses to make his points, in case you feel a need to follow along.

Kelby's writing style is sometimes quirky so he warns you in advance and lets you know how to avoid the quirky parts if you find them irritating. Make sure you read the eight paragraph prologue "Seven Things You'll Wish You Had Known Before Reading This Book". He has other titles that cover other programs if that's what you need. He doesn't spend time giving you advice on Lightroom, Aperture and other programs. Scott Kelby's "the Adobe photoshop CS5 book for digital photograpers" is to the point, logically laid out and keeps to the subject at hand.
